What is irrigation?
Irrigation is the method of delivering water through the soil to meet the water needs of crops in agriculture and gardening.
Sources and methods
The main water sources for this system are: lakes, rivers, reservoirs or ponds, natural waters such as wells drawing from underground aquifers, and reclaimed water. Incorporating irrigation into crop management boosts production, supports plant biomass formation and is critically important for food security.
The main field irrigation method is flood or furrow irrigation. Sprinkler and drip irrigation systems allow for efficient water use and reduce the drawbacks of watering crops.
The goal of these irrigation systems is to artificially draw water from the natural environment and deliver it — via the project distribution — to the field to support agricultural production.
Choosing the right system depends on many factors: topography, soil type, crop, water availability and budget. At Agrodetalles we advise every grower on the option best suited to their operation.
